New Year, New Regional Editions: Three Exclusive Cuban Releases for 2025
Hello dear reader,
Few things in the cigar world generate excitement like a new Edición Regional, and 2025 has already given us three intriguing releases, each crafted for a different market, each carrying its own identity, and all set to become prized additions for collectors. I know, it’s only January but it seems like time doesn’t wait for anyone and Habanos started delivering these previously announced beauties. This January, the UK, Germany, and France welcomed new regional exclusives from La Flor de Cano, Saint Luis Rey, and Juan Lopez, each bringing something special to the table.
Regional Editions have always fascinated me, not just because of their limited availability but because they offer a fresh take on brands that often don’t see much innovation in their standard lines. And I feel like they are in some ways more limited than the Limited Editions as they have a one time production run and they are available for a very small part of the world and if you don’t live there, well you really have to put in the work to get a box. The thrill of tracking them down, the decision of whether to age them or smoke them right away, and the knowledge that once they’re gone, they’re gone, it all adds to their allure. With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at these three new releases and what makes them worth seeking out.
1. La Flor de Cano Selectos No. 3 (UK Edicion Regional)
The La Flor de Cano Selectos No. 3 is a throwback to an era when slender vitolas ruled the industry. Measuring 165 by 42 ring gauge it bears the name of Cervantes, it’s a format that has largely faded in favor of robustos and thicker smokes, but one that still delivers elegance and complexity when done right. Let’s remember that the first Bolivar Gold Medal was crafted in this beautiful format.
Historically, La Flor de Cano is a brand known for short-filler cigars, but this Regional Edition follows in the footsteps of past UK exclusives by being handmade with long-filler tobacco. It’s the third La Flor de Cano RE for the UK, following the Short Robusto (2010) and Gran Cano (2013).
With 5,000 individually numbered boxes of 25 (125,000 cigars in total), availability will be limited but not impossible. However, considering the UK’s track record with Regional Editions, these cigars will likely be sought after, especially by those who appreciate classic vitolas.
Collectors and enthusiasts alike should take note: this is one of the only Cervantes currently in Cuban production outside of the Montecristo No. 1. That alone makes it special. Kudos to Hunters and Frankau for choosing this “gran vitola”, it’s one of my personal favourites.
2. Saint Luis Rey Belicoso (Germany Edicion Regional)
5th Avenue Products Trading portfolio just got enriched with their first San Luis Rey regional. The vitola, 140 by 52 ring gauge is the classic Campanas, identical to the Bolivar Belicoso Fino, which tells us a lot about the smoking experience to expect.
This limited production run of 6,000 boxes (150,000 cigars total) means it will be slightly more accessible than some other Regionals, but demand in Germany, one of Cuba’s strongest cigar markets, could see these disappear fast.
With a price tag of €20 per cigar (i doubt we’ll ever see it at this price), it sits in an attractive spot for both smokers and collectors. The fact that Saint Luis Rey isn’t a brand that frequently receives special releases makes this an interesting one to watch. It has the potential to develop a cult following, especially among those who enjoy the rich, full bodied profile Saint Luis Rey is known for.
3. Juan Lopez Dom Juan 1622 (France Edicion Regional)
Named after Molière’s 1665 play "Dom Juan" and his birth year, this French-exclusive release to hit the shelves this January pays tribute to both literary heritage and Cuban craftsmanship, workers and lectors as well. At 150 by 54 ring gauge (Geniales), it shares its vitola with the Hoyo de Monterrey Le Hoyo de San Juan, I bet I got your attention now, right?
With 10,000 numbered boxes of 10 cigars (100,000 total production), it is a bit more limited than the three new Regionals. France has a history of receiving standout Regional Editions, and with Juan Lopez being a brand that already carries strong appeal for smokers of medium to full bodied cigars, this release will likely become a sought-after collectible. Actually this is the one I will hunt down the most out of the three.
At €32 per cigar, it remains reasonable considering the vitola and exclusivity. Expect it to sell out quickly, especially among European collectors who appreciate Juan Lopez’s balanced yet rich flavor profile.
Collectability and Accessibility: How Hard Will These Be to Find?
Regional Editions are always a challenge to acquire outside their designated markets. However, some are easier to track down than others:
The UK’s La Flor de Cano Selectos No. 3 will be available through Casas del Habano, Habanos Specialists, and select hotels and clubs, but with its vintage-inspired format, expect demand to be high, especially from collectors who enjoy aged smokes.
Germany’s Saint Luis Rey Belicoso benefits from a slightly larger production and a relatively moderate price point, meaning they could be easier to obtain, at least in the early months after release.
France’s Juan Lopez Dom Juan 1622 is the most exclusive of the three, and history has shown that French Regional Editions disappear fast. If you’re after this one, move quickly, I am already in the race.
For collectors, these three cigars offer a range of vitolas and brand histories, making them appealing in different ways. The La Flor de Cano brings back a nearly forgotten size, the Saint Luis Rey marks a first for the Germany Regional program, and the Juan Lopez ties its identity to French literary history.
Looking Ahead to More Regional Editions this year an with these three cigars setting the stage for the 2025, we can expect more exciting Edición Regional releases. Every Regional Edition tells a different story, shaped by the country it’s made for, the brand it represents, and the vitola chosen. The thrill lies in discovering them, smoking them, and, for some, patiently aging them to see how they evolve.
As always, I’ll be keeping a close eye on what’s next. Until then, here’s to another year of great smokes and rare finds.
Wishing you rich flavors and good company—until we meet again.
