Un Nuevo Capítulo para Diplomaticos. The Global Launch of the Cancillieres

Un Nuevo Capítulo para Diplomaticos. The Global Launch of the Cancillieres

Hello, dear reader,

I just came back from Sofia, where I had the privilege to attend the global launch of Diplomáticos Cancilleres. It is always a treat when you have Habanos releases within the EU, it’s easy to get there and you get to meet neighbours which don’t always come to Havana, so it's always a pleasure to attend these global launches. This was a night to remember, an evening that checked all the boxes, as you will see later on in this article.

A brief history of Diplomáticos,  and why Cancilleres matters

Diplomáticos remains one of the more discreet brands in the Cuban repertoire, born in the 1960s as a kind of modest counterpart to Montecristo. Over the decades its production was pruned, and for some time only a narrow slice of its original line remained in regular production, as their focus was more on Regional Editions

With Cancilleres, Diplomáticos is adding a new shape and also making a statement. This vitola, Centrofinos (50 × 130 mm) is the first “new regular-production” release for the brand in decades. Many were expecting the cigar to feature a pigtail but in reality, it doesn’t, it is a normal parejo. Hand-made with long filler from the legendary Vuelta Abajo region in Pinar del Río, it carries the very DNA of Cuban tradition.

Cancilleres is, in many ways, an invitation  to rediscover a humble, perhaps overlooked brand, given fresh expression, a bridge between continuity and renewal.

The Night of the Launch, Sofia’s The One Exclusive Club

The date was 27 November 2025. The venue: The One Exclusive Club, a very fancy building known for hosting the city’s most elegant parties and special evenings.

Walking in, you feel a warm welcome from the staff and then you use an escalator to go to the seating area where amazing staff awaits. The club’s very high ceilings, artful lighting, glasses clincking… it all blended into a modern posh event. The crowd was a mixture of seasoned aficionados, Habanos professionals, and connoisseurs from across Europe and beyond. One of the best events I’ve attended in Sofia.

The evening unfolded like a carefully rolled cigar, (allow me this pun, please): slow, luxurious and rich in nuance. Latin-fusion rhythms from the band Del Padre set the pace, followed by a striking performance from Bulgarian singer Dara. Then came a graceful aerial pole act by two dancers, a true a display of strength and elegance, followed by interactive dancing courtesy of Pambos Dancing, and ending with a high-energy DJ set.

Lights dimmed, cigars glowed, and somewhere between music and laughter, I decided to light up the  Cancilleres. It felt smooth, balanced and promising, even if the box date was Oct25, it was perfectly ready to be smoked and also presented signs of aging potential.

The Smoke: Cancilleres, First Impressions

Cancilleres bears the hallmark of its brand: “Totalmente a Mano con Tripa Larga.”  The wrapper was even-toned and delicate, with a natural gloss under the soft lights of the club. It begins creamy and intense, subtle notes of wood and sweet tobacco. rose gently, with an aroma that balanced richness and refinement. Once the cigar warms up the profile deepens, soft spices and a hint of leather emerge, and the medium-to-full strength reveals itself gracefully. It kept consistent and elegant, delivering a refined, lingering finish and even though the cigar can be categorized as a robusto, it was very well rolled offering a prolonged smoking experience. Overall, the smoking time was over 60 minutes for me. It offered a perfect session for a late-evening gathering, conversation flowing, music in the background, and cigar ash resting softly on an ashtray.

What Cancilleres Signals for the Future of Cuban Cigars

In a market often overwhelmed by limited editions and showpieces, the launch of Cancilleres stands out as a reaffirmation of tradition over spectacle. Diplomáticos may never have had the buzz of Montecristo or Cohiba, but perhaps that is its strength. With Cancilleres, the brand offers authenticity, value, consistency, and a return to what made Habanos cigars revered: craftsmanship, balanced blends, and respect for heritage.

If this cigar finds itself favored among connoisseurs, it could easily become a “go-to” in regular rotation , a dependable companion for dinners, meetings, and evenings alike. In a moment where many cigar smokers chase flashy bands, Cancilleres proves to us why we fell in love with Habanos in the first place: the taste!

No Sofia Night Is Complete Without a Visit to Cohiba Atmosphere

Before the evening’s festivities even began, I made my way to the Cohiba Atmosphere,  because in Sofia, that’s where any proper cigar day should start. Luxurious, comfortable, and impeccably appointed, the lounge has a way of slowing the world down the moment you step inside. I met friends from Greece there, and within minutes the conversation was flowing as easily as the smoke.

Soft lighting, leather chairs and couches, and the familiar pulse of Cuban music in the background set the tone. While we were sitting in that refined space, sharing cigars and anticipation, it felt like the perfect prelude to the night ahead, a quiet cigar before the grandeur of the global launch.

Before I conclude this article I would like to give a special “Thank you!!” to the Kaliman Karibe team for putting together such an amazing event and for making me feel like home every time I visit. I appreciate the invitation and the efforts you put in to making sure this event was nothing less than spectacular. See you all very soon.

Wishing you rich flavors and good company, until we meet again.
